GENRES: Fiction, Historical Fiction
What has been your most rewarding moment as an author?
One of the most rewarding parts of being an author is seeing my friends and family enjoy what I’ve written. I also like using their names for characters in my books as a small gesture of appreciation.
What kind of research goes into writing your novels and how much time does it take?
I enjoy researching a book almost as much as writing it. I try to stay organized and pay close attention to detail. It’s one of the most challenging parts of writing historical fiction because readers are sharp and quick to notice even small errors or inconsistencies.
How often do you write, and do you have a strict routine and writing plan?
My goal is to do something related to writing every day. Some days that means writing; other days it’s research, publishing, or marketing. Keeping a routine is essential to staying productive.
Have you ever based characters on real people? Give us a couple of examples.
I believe we all die twice: once when we take our last breath, and again when our name is spoken for the last time. I wrote my first novel, From Shadows to Sunlight, about my grandfather to preserve his life story and keep his name alive.
What’s the best piece of writing-related advice that you’ve received?
Stephen King once wrote, “The editor is always right.” I try to remember that advice. Authors are often too emotionally immersed in their work to see it as clearly and objectively as readers do. My wife, Carol, has become my most trusted editor.
What made you consider writing in the first place?
I never expected to write a book. But after my mother passed away in 2021, I found a safe deposit box she had left for me. Inside was a spiral-bound journal my grandfather wrote in 1988—his life story in his own hand.
Reading it was a revelation. He wrote honestly about his childhood, his struggles, and his service aboard the USS New Orleans during World War II. He was stationed in Honolulu and on duty the morning of December 7, 1941, later serving in several major Pacific battles. Like many veterans, he minimized his own role while honoring those around him. His story changed how I saw him and deepened my appreciation for the life I’ve been able to live because of his courage and sacrifice.
